The rate of change
changed.

The Hypernovelty Institute studies what happens when technological, cultural, and societal transformation outpaces human capacity to adapt, and what to do about it.

THE PROBLEM

Novelty is natural.
Hypernovelty is not.

For most of human history, change arrived slowly enough for cultures to absorb it. A new tool, a new trade route, a new idea, each had decades or centuries to integrate into the social fabric.

That constraint is gone. AI, synthetic biology, climate feedback loops, and geopolitical realignment are arriving simultaneously, at speeds no institution was designed to process. The gap between the rate of environmental change and human adaptive capacity is widening. Not linearly. Exponentially.

This is hypernovelty: a world where the only constant is that the rate of change itself is accelerating.

"Our minds and bodies are ill-prepared for the world of hypernovelty we have created."
Heather Heying & Bret Weinstein,
A Hunter-Gatherer's Guide to the 21st Century
THE INSTITUTE

Research meets resilience.

The Hypernovelty Institute bridges the gap between academic complexity science and practical organizational survival. We study accelerating change not as an abstraction, but as the defining operational challenge of the next century.

01

Research

Original research at the intersection of complexity science, evolutionary biology, and technology studies. We measure the acceleration, map its contours, and identify the failure modes it creates in human systems.

02

Frameworks

Translating research into decision-making tools. Organizations need more than awareness of hypernovelty, they need protocols for operating inside it. Scenario planning for a world where scenarios expire faster than you can plan.

03

Consulting

Direct engagement with organizations navigating acute disruption. Government agencies, corporate leadership teams, and educational institutions facing the gap between their planning horizon and reality.

RESEARCH AREAS

Where we focus.

AI Acceleration

The compounding effects of artificial intelligence on institutional decision-making, labor markets, and the cognitive load of knowledge work.

Organizational Adaptation

How hierarchies, planning cycles, and corporate structures fail under hypernovelty, and what replaces them.

Evolutionary Mismatch

The growing gap between environments our biology evolved for and the ones we now inhabit. Cognitive, social, and physiological consequences.

Policy & Governance

Regulatory frameworks designed for stable environments applied to exponential ones. What governance looks like when the territory changes faster than the map.

The question is not whether hypernovelty will define the next century. It already has.

The question is whether we develop the institutional capacity to navigate it, or continue applying industrial-age tools to exponential-age problems. The Hypernovelty Institute exists to close that gap.
